2018 IBCPC Participatory Dragon Boat Festival

Florence, Italy | July 2018

THE TRIP

July 3-9

This Italian excursion is focused on competitive Dragonboat racing. However, even in the face of such competition, travelers cannot ignore the force of the Italian culture that gives the city of Florence its charm. Spend six days competing against some of the best and most passionate Dragonboat racers in the world, and six afternoons exploring the city of Florence and the surrounding countryside.

The IBCPC Dragon Boat Festival is held every four years under the auspices of the International Breast Cancer Paddler’s Commission. The Festival is an international non-competitive participatory event targeting Breast Cancer Survivors teams who engage in Dragon Boat activities as post-operative rehabilitation.

For the first time since its institution in 2005, the IBCPC FESTIVAL will take place in Continental Europe: in ITALY!

ARRIVAL IN FLORENCE

  • Welcome to Florence! Upon arrival you will be welcomed by your tour manager at the airport and together, board your waiting motor coach and drive to the hotel in Florence city center. Considered the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance, Florence has a vast artistic and architectural heritage. Historical figures such as Dante and Michelangelo found the city to be an ideal forum for their artistic and intellectual development.
  • Settle in and refresh before meeting a local English-speaking guide for guided walking tour of this magnificent city. See Santa Maria del Fiore - the Duomo, or the Florence Cathedral. This structure dominates the city with its enormous dome, which was built to dwarf even the great buildings of ancient Greece and Rome. The Baptistry, located next to the Duomo, contains colorful 13th century mosaics and is the place where Dante was baptized. Also at the Bapistry, admire Lorenzo Ghiberti’s glowing doors, often termed the “Gates of Paradise” because of its 10 panels, displaying scriptural subjects in gold. See the Palazzo Vecchio or “Old Palace”. Completed in 1322, its huge bell was meant to warn citizens of fire, flood or enemy attack. Stop at Piazzale Michelangelo, which offers a magnificent view of the old town center, and the famous Ponte Vecchio Bridge, which was built in 1345 and is the oldest bridge in Florence.
  • A special Welcome Dinner will be planned for the team at a local restaurant.

Started in 1457 for banker Luca Pitti, the Palazzo Pitti was an attempt by Pitti to rival the extravagance of the Medici family. The palace became the primary residence of the Medicis in 1550 and subsequently all the city rulers lived there. Tour the Galleria Palatina, which contains many masterpieces by artists such as Botticelli, Caravaggio, Perugino, and Raphael, followed by a walk through the Imperial Apartments, which are decorated with frescoes, tapestries, and ornate gold. Tour the grounds of the Boboli Gardens. Wander through boxwood hedges, clipped into symmetrical geometric patterns and continue your walk through the groves of oak and cypress trees, passing by countless statues. High above the gardens, stands the Forte di Belvedere, which was constructed in the late 16th century for the Medici Grand Dukes.
